Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson Calls Ethereum Leadership a Dictatorship

  • Cardano’s co-founder and lead developer Charles Hoskinson has revealed plans to upgrade the blockchain’s governance system to enter its Voltaire era.
  • The new protocol will support decentralised but efficient voting to ensure innovation continues beyond any one developer.
  • While discussing the changes, Hoskinson gave Ethereum a clip behind the ears, labelling its governance as a “dictatorship”.
  • Cardano’s co-founder argued that Vitalik Buterin acts as the only leader with enough influence to rally the troops and make changes to Ethereum, despite its “decentralised” nature.

In shocking news, Charles Hoskinson isn’t happy about something.

The outspoken Cardano developer is never far from crypto headlines, often due to his fiery and combative nature born from his passion for blockchain innovation.

This time, Hoskinson is waging war on Cointelegraph, who published an interview where the Cardano co-founder referred to Ethereum’s leadership as a “dictatorship”.

The computer engineer took to social media to voice his displeasure with the publication’s choice of headline, claiming it was “dramatic”.

Of course, Hoskinson did refer to Ethereum as a dictatorship – but he is implying the article missed the point of the comparison and instead made it an “us versus them” headline.

So, what was Hoskinson’s point?

Cardano’s Voltaire Mechanism to Solve “Governance Trilemma”

The developer sat down with Cointelegraph to discuss the upcoming governance changes to Cardano’s network, as the blockchain enters its Voltaire era. According to Hoskinson, the new model solves the long-standing “governance trilemma”, where developers struggle to balance “efficiency, effectiveness and integrity”.

The Voltaire-era system will utilise delegated representatives alongside an organisation called Intersect (comprising blockchain users) to package discourse into something the community can vote upon.

According to Hoskinson, this works separately from competitors like Ethereum and Bitcoin.

[Cardano has] a fair shot of avoiding the anarchy of Bitcoin or the dictatorship of Ethereum, and you actually have something that can move forward with one voice, but it’s still decentralized at the end of the day because it represents everybody.

The current Cardano team is working on a constitution that will apply to Intersect and other governance bodies which will likely create a clearer picture of how the Volatire mechanism will operate.

Importantly, the new model allows Cardano governance to surge forward regardless of whether Hoskinson – or any other developers – are active.

Vitalik Buterin Runs the Show, According to Hoskinson

Unfortunately for Hoskinson, the headline from this interview was always going to be his comments around Bitcoin and Ethereum.

When asked to explain himself a little more, the Cardano co-founder – who also worked on developing Ethereum back in 2014 – turned his sights to Vitalik Buterin.

Everyone looks to him for the roadmap. Everybody looks to him for inspiration, and he’s also the only person who has enough power to rally people.

Buterin and Hoskinson have a chequered past, with the duo parting ways over a disagreement on whether Ethereum should be for-profit or not.

Regardless, Hoskinson will be hoping the “dictatorship” comments fade into the online ether, and that the community will instead focus on the potential innovation and progression posed by Cardano’s upcoming governance upgrades.
